Facebook has been building augmented reality glasses for what seems like forever. They just announced the project called “Live Maps” that will create 3D maps of the world. The video footage witnessed showed the maps producing multi-layer representations of the world, using crowdsourced data, traditional maps and footage captured through phones and the glasses themselves. You will be able to get notifications in thin air, identify objects with labels, or even create your own avatar to hang around with real people.

Other companies have already attempted to take on VR like Magic Leap, Microsoft, and Google. Facebook has mentioned several times that it is building AR glasses and now rumors circulated that its partnering with Ray-Ban maker Luxottica on one of the prototypes. Oculus connect is just getting started, so it’s possible you will hear more about Live Maps late at the Facebook conference.
